Power Pole Transformer
Technically, power poles are not one of our products; we build and market Power Pole Transformers, but as they are a key ingredient in the use of pole mounted transformers, a specialized step down transformer, we thought it would be beneficial to orient you, the customer, to what is happening with this product currently. Power Pole Transformers mount, naturally, on power poles, though not all power poles carry a Power Pole Transformer. But did you know that there are now dozens of new variations of poles now being produced? Gone are the days when only the wooden pole is king! Power Pole Transformers can be seen to adorn many variations of poles made of new man-made durable and low-maintenance, long-lasting materials.
Wood power poles have been the convention for
generations. Southern yellow pine is the most widely used, but many
other species are used; Douglas fir,
Pacific silver fir. jack pine, lodgepole pine, and Western
red cedar. these demand special treatment
to help prevent
Despite the care and treatment, coupled with regular inspections and maintenance, wood poles have a life span limited to about 25-50 years, depending on local conditions of soil and weather. Consequently, more and more alternatives that require less care and maintenance and last much longer are being developed. Steel and concrete are traditional materials increasingly being applied to construction of power poles, while newer and more exotic materials such as fiberglass composites are beginning to carve out a strong niche. Where it has been normal to expect power transmission poles and towers to be made of artificial materials, due to their size and construction requirements, these same measures are now also being applied to power poles. Power Pole Transformers can be mounted on poles as tall as 120 feet, though the standard pole in the US is only 40 feet. Height above ground is about 34 feet, while about 6 feet is buried. Distance apart is around 125 feet. Since there are now several kinds of services that utilize wires or cables to carry information, like television, telephone, data cables, and others, the owner of the original pole, most commonly the local power company or telephone company, can lease space on the pole for alternative uses. When this is the case, a power pole is more correctly referred to as a utility pole. A convention of placement and spacing between different applications has been evolved in order to adequately organize and provide for the best safety and efficiency of the various wires, Power Pole Transformers, cables, lighting, decorations, traffic signals, etc. that can be found on a power pole. Below is a photo illustrating this. As you can see, the safer and better protected lines are lower, while those most likely to carry dangerous levels of electricity, and the most likely to be harmful when too near, are placed at the top. This example is only one of may possible configurations; there are a large array of services that now vie for space on power poles.
