Pole Mount Transformer

Pole Mount Transformers are
used at a crucial point in the distribution phase of the power system.  It is at this point where the final overall level of voltage is established for a particular site.  Other subsequent transformers may further modify that voltage to more exact specifications to handle insufficient levels or close-tolerance demands, but a Pole Mount Transformer converts and generally reduces voltage to within the acceptable parameters for small shop and home electrical use.  Mostly, this will be 120/240v single-phase power for North America.

Pole Mount Transformers can also be installed which will deliver commercially rated power, such as 440/480v, for industrial applications and in three-phase for heavy equipment and motors.  But industrial sites will often have distribution transformers installed at ground levels behind protective gates and fences so as to handle the higher voltages and current flows necessary to deal with the higher demands of heavy electrical motors and equipment.  Pole Mount Transformers with three-phase and for heavier use may utilize two or more poles for a single installation.  The level of demand and transformer capacity needed will determine if it is feasible to use a Pole Mount Transformer at such a site.

Due to the increasing demand to hide power lines and to clear skylines of unsightly accumulations of power, telephone, cable and other service lines, it has become more and more the practice to bury such lines underground within the larger cities and towns, while Pole Mount Transformers have become increasingly relegated to rural and small town use.  Even in the country the more upscale residential areas have adopted Pad Mount Transformers installed at ground level with lines to and from being buried.

Pole Mount Transformers most commonly convert 7.500 volts to the 220/240v range, but often range from 16kVA to 100kVZ, and reduce 11,000 to 33,000 volts to 400 volts.  From such a Pole Mount Transformer you usually will see three wires connecting to the residence.  Two are 120v lines and one is a ground.  These will be wired in such a way as to allow 120v service while still making it possible to establish a 220/240v service by ganging the two 120v lines for such things as baseboard heating, motors, dryers, ovens, water heaters, etc.

Due to their exposure to the elements, Pole Mount Transformers are usually specially constructed using special oil baths to cool, insulate and protect wires from moisture and corrosion or other influences leading to short-circuits.  Additionally, the exterior of the container may have cooling vanes or fins to radiate excess heat and therefore extend their life and reliability.  In highly corrosive environments the outer containers may be made of special alloys that resist these factors.  Corrosive-resistant coatings are also often used, and container shapes can be designed so as to limit accumulation of water and harmful chemicals.

Pole Mount Transformer wiring is usually aluminum, which has been the standard since the early 70's, but either or both of the windings can be copper.  Copper is more expensive, and weighs more than aluminum, but also has the advantage of being more durable and efficient.  The limiting factors for Pole Mount Transformers are mainly weight, with cost being a close second; therefore the tendency to use aluminum over copper.

In recent years, new power efficient designs have been pushed by both government and industry through establishment of Energy Star programs and government guidelines.  Read about these on the New Transformer Site.  You can directly access the Energy Star page or the TP1 Transformer pages that explain the background and the newest standards.
