Pad Mount Transformer
Pad Mount Transformers are the modern alternative to pole mount transformers in residential and city areas where it is desirable to limit the placing of overhead wires and curb the proliferation of power poles.
Pad Mount Transformers are analogous to a pole mount transformer in that they perform the same function of stepping high voltage distribution power down to a low voltage point-of-use power. All the same features will be present in either type of transformer, but there are some differences in a Pad Mount Transformer over and above the obvious ones of shape and placement. A Pad Mount Transformer will usually not need to deliver as high a level of power as a pole mount since pole mount transformers are used in rural areas where homes and businesses are farther apart and therefore need the extra oomph to make up for losses over the extra distance. A Pad Mount Transformer will also incorporate in its design safety features not necessary on a pole mount. The main one of these is lockable and secure inspection doors and compartment for the primary and secondary bushings and other connection points, as well as for any fusing, special controls, meters, etc. to be used on that particular model. The casing must be relatively tamper-resistant as it will be directly available to whomever may come in contact with it. This may involve special bolts, tamper-proof nuts, welds, shielding, etc. to make the installation safe from prying hands, as well as from wildlife, weather, physical impacts and flowing water. Another difference is that pad mounts are often coated with colors that better blend with the environment. As is the case with pole mounts, they are sometimes gray, a very neutral color, but one can often see shades of green. Though Pad Mount Transformers are mostly thought of as being mounted on the ground on their pad, they can also be placed underground. This is especially useful in urban areas where inspection and service tunnels are common. But they can also be buried in their own vault when desired, no matter the location. The various sizes available range from Three phase pad mounted transformers 75kVA up to 5000kVA and with voltages ranging from 2,400 up to 34,500 delta or wye. Low voltage applications range in size from 208y/120 through 24,940y/14,000. More and more residences are using these nowadays, but they are especially desirable, as well, in large buildings containing warehouses, manufacturing, institutions, hospitals, stores, businesses, industrial complexes, etc. For this reason Pad Mount Transformers come in pretty much any phase, wiring configuration, or frequency, and can be designed to be mounted on ground-level, below-ground, or on special platforms fitting their individual application. Though the installer has great latitude in methods of screening or obscuring their presence, Pad Mount Transformers do have to meet certain installation guidelines that will be established and enforced by the appropriate local authorities. Besides the usual wiring codes and installation basics, one should also make sure to know if there are any specified clearances to adhere to regarding distance from buildings and other structures, clearances to screening materials or plants, required access specifications, variances, etc. One should check with agencies in charge of building inspections, permits, etc, and in some areas with fire authorities. It is advisable to be thorough in doing so to prevent unfortunate confusions, delays and unwanted expenses. Practicalities also exist which demand certain restrictions that may or may not be covered by local codes. Sufficient room must be available for service technicians to be able to freely open the inspection doors and gain access to any necessary portions of the transformer. A three-foot clearance in front is common, but be sure to verify that will be enough for your purposes. Also, it is inadvisable to install too near trees as it is necessary to disturb the soil when installing, and tree roots may become an issue for both the electrical installation and proper maintenance and for the health of the trees.
