Other Transformer Types also includes the Variac Transformer. This Other transformer Type is so named because it is a (vari)able (AC) transformer, thus you get variac. This type of transformer is unique in the industry. Most other transformers are relatively fixed, with the only option for changing voltages limited to a system of taps that give a fixed set of optional voltage outputs with no flexibility to adjust up or down mid-operation to accommodate varying conditions or needs. This one, however, uses a single winding, generally in a single layer, as both primary and secondary with variations of wiring schemes in which ends of line and load circuits can be connected to taps on the slider, other end of the windings, or at some midpoint of the windings. In this way it uses the varying balance between the numbers of windings on either side of the connections to reduce or magnify output, resulting in the portion being primary either opposing or aiding output in the secondary. The set-up essentially makes it possible to have a varying auto transformer wiring scheme that can even double as a step up or step down transformer simply by moving the slider far enough to move past the tap that connects somewhere along the middle part of the windings. In other words, moving the slider knob from left to right or right to left includes that there can be a point past which one way it is a step up transformer and the other way it is a step down transformer. The range is not equal between step down and step up capacity, but is made to limit step up to about 115-120ْ of applied mains voltage. They may be ganged to achieve higher voltages and for 3 phase operation. In the actual construction of a Variac the core is toroidal. The slider is designed so that it passes over a portion of the windings that have been deliberately made with part of the insulating coating removed so there can be a contact allowing passage of current between a carbon brush or roller on the end of the slider, and the bare wire on the windings. Since there is no isolation in a variac and main voltage could be carried through the output, it must be regarded as live at all times. Variacs are often used in laboratory situations for experimentation purposes, to operate special non-standard equipment, and for testing of equipment where it is desirable to observe the operation of electrical machinery, appliances and such under the less than perfect voltages they may actually encounter in the field. They have been used as dimmers and as motor speed controls, in heaters, in hot-wire plastic foam cutters, to control lighting, maintain optimal voltages for sensitive equipment, . Other Transformer Types, as with the Pole and Pad Transformers, are now all compliant with the Energy Star protocols and government regulations now have set standards for all TP1 Transformers.
