European Transformers
European Transformers are fundamentally constructed using the same mathematics as all transformers, but differ in that the European power system has been set up using a higher standard voltage. This was decided based on factors as outlined below. All AC power systems incorporate approximately the same elements, but they can be set up in a variety of ways that will affect safety, efficiency and economics. American and European systems were developed separately and upon different basic standard power supply ratings. European transformers have to accommodate 3300 volts to ground. The European systems are also set up on a 415V system vs. the American 230V that is delivered to a household. There are pros and cons to this. The American system allows fewer customers to be serviced by any one Pole Mount Transformer, and consequently fewer people are affected when a transformer goes down. The European Transformers can supply a whole neighborhood rather than one to three homes, as is the case with the American system. By saving resistance factors with a higher voltage, fewer transformers are needed. Power wastage is less when higher voltages and fewer transformers are used. Fewer transformers also means a savings in installation costs and maintenance costs over time. European Transformers service 50Hz, rather than 60Hz; the American convention. They are not interchangeable and this must be a factor in any planned purchases. ALWAYS check existing supply services to assure which one is available. ALWAYS purchase only that transformer rated for that particular service. Collect sufficient data before ordering any transformer; this will save time and expense and can save needless grief if the wrong transformer were to be installed. Also be aware that European Transformers may need to accommodate different basic power system parameters as bordering countries may have certain differences in their basic structures. This is mostly handled since a thing called synchronous grids have been established in most parts of the world. Most of the European countries belong to the UCTE (Union for the Co-ordination of Transmission of Electricity), which allows energy to be exchanged between countries, just as the US does between its states. European Transformers used within this grid should meet the same standards in any part of the UCTE. Countries outside this area are not necessarily set up under the same parameters and any interconnection may have to have special variable frequency transformers installed to protect each side from the differences in frequencies. Transformers ordered for areas outside any grid may have to be constructed for an entirely different frequency than ones inside the grid. The Scandinavian countries, Many of the former Soviet Union countries, the UK, Southeastern Mediterranean, Southwestern Mediterranean, and many other areas of the world, including the US, Canada and parts of Mexico are now interconnected in their own grids. In rural areas voltages in electrical systems tend be set higher since longer distances are being service and higher voltages allow for less loss to resistance. This is true of the US as well as in other countries, but, of course, the basic voltages are different and any European Transformers will have to be ordered to match the incoming voltage (primary side) with an outgoing (secondary) voltage that meets the requirements for their particular system. Both numbers must be known so that the output is satisfactory for the end user. Construction of transformers depends on a ratio of windings that is proportional to the input relative to the output.
